Description

MELTON ROSS A 18 TA 01 SE (south side) 6/30 Melton Hall - II Farmhouse. Early C19, probably for Marmaduke Grayburn. Grey brick in Flemish bond. Pantile roof. L-shaped on plan: double-depth, 2-room central entrance-hall west front with 3-room wing to rear left; range of outbuildings around courtyard to rear right. 2 storeys, 5 bays; symmetrical. Plinth. Doorcase with attached tapered Doric columns supporting plain entablature and hood; 6-panel door beneath moulded cornice and radial fanlight in round-arched panelled reveal with archivolt. Unequal 15-pane recessed sashes with projecting sills and cambered wedge lintels. 3-course first-floor band. 12-pane first-floor sashes in similar surrounds. Stepped and dentilled brick eaves cornice. Stone-coped gables with shaped kneelers. Right return: flush tripartite sashes with glazing bars beneath segmental brick arches to ground and first floor (those to left are C20 insertions). Diocletian attic windows with glazing bars to left and right returns. Right return: rear wing facing courtyard has 6-fielded-panel door beneath segmental brick arch, and 12-pane, 16-pane and tripartite sashes with glazing bars beneath segmental arches. Interior. Stairhall to rear has open well staircase with wreathed handrail, plain balusters and clustered newel; modillion cornice and moulded ceiling with acanthus leaves and garland. Ribbed white marble chimneypiece to ground floor right with carved floral ornament. Main rooms have moulded cornices, panelled window shutters and 6-panel doors in architraves. A brass bell which formerly hung at the Hall is inscribed E SMITH 1819, perhaps the date of the building.
