MELTON ROSS RACE LANE TA 01 SE (west side, off) High Wood Farmhouse 6/31 GV II

Farmhouse. c1830 for J G S Smith, with additions to left and rear of c1860. Yellow-grey brick in Flemish bond. Welsh slate roof. Early section L- shaped on plan: 2-room central entrance-hall front, double-depth, with stairhall to rear and wing to rear right; Later C19 drawing room and rear wing to left. South front: 2 storeys, 3 bays; symmetrical. Plinth, central bay slightly recessed. Flight of 3 stone steps to plain board door beneath radial fanlight flanked by plain pilasters and jamb-lights with stone sills beneath segmental rubbed brick arch. Wide segmental-arched tripartite sashes with glazing bars (apart from plate glass lower central sashes to ground floor), stone sills and segmental rubbed brick arches. Deep eaves with paired brackets. Hipped roof. Pair of axial stacks with stone coping and square pots. Left and right returns have recessed 12-pane sashes under rubbed brick flat arches. Wing set back to left has full-height flat-roofed canted brick bay with plate-glass sashes. Hipped roof. Interior. Open well staircase with ramped and wreathed handrail, slender tapered column balusters and clustered newel; moulded cornices to main rooms, entrance and stairhall; main rooms on each floor have 6-beaded-panel doors and windows with shutters in ribbed architraves with carved paterae at the angles and moulded cornices; similar surround to fireplace in study to rear left.
