Description

ASHOVER SK3463 HILL ROAD 1264-0/11/54 (East side) Rose Cottage GV II House. C18 with mid-to-late C19 alterations. Squared coursed sandstone with ashlar dressings, and slate roof with gable chimneys. Double-depth plan. 2 storeys plus attics. South facade of 3 bays, with 2 single-storey bay windows with slated roofs, each with 2 sashed windows without glazing bars facing forwards. The first floor windows above are sashes without glazing bars in plain stone surrounds. The central bay has a small C18 window surround of a single light with elliptical head and with an architrave with edge-roll moulding. The central single-storey porch is of sandstone ashlar, of rectangular plan with a coved cornice and with a blocking course with ball finials. Attached at the left is a single-storey outbuilding with a stone slate roof. It partly covers the east gable wall of the house, which has windows with stone surrounds and flat-faced mullions - of 3 lights on the ground floor, 2 large lights to the first floor, and 2 lights to the attic. To the right on the ground floor, close to the junction with the outhouse, is a door of 6 flush panels in a plain surround with a flat sandstone slab forming a canopy above. INTERIOR: not fully inspected. The house was in a derelict condition, with its timber floors mostly collapsed, at time of survey (March 1992).
