Description

BURRINGTON CP BURRINGTON so 47 SW 3/11 Lower House and adjoining byre II Farmhouse and adjoining byre. Circa 1600 with mid-C19 and mid-C20 altera- tions. Timber-framed with rendered infill on rubble base, rubble end walls to farmhouse (west one is rendered), slate roof and brick ridge end stacks, (the large original rubble east stack has been partly rebuilt in brick). Possibly a longhouse derivative. Farmhouse of two framed bays aligned east/ west, with large external rubble chimney at east end. Single storey and attic with dormers. Framing: three panels from sill to wall-plate. South front elevation: ground floor has a 3-light casement with a plank weathering, a single-light casement and a square C19 multi-paned metal window with a cambered head. There are two gabled dormers with moulded bargeboards and 2-light leaded casements. Entrance probably in original position in east bay and has a C19 gabled canopy on shaped brackets and a ledged and battened door with strap hinges. Interior: the east bay has two large lateral chamfered ceiling beams, a large blocked fireplace and a winder staircase. Byre: timber-framed on rubble base, weatherboarded with corrugated iron roof. Two-and-a-half framed bays, the half-bay adjoins the east end of the farmhouse and encloses the chimney. Two levels. Framing: three panels from sill to wall-plate (two rows of panels at lower level and one row at upper level). No trusses visible externally). South elevation has a gabled dormer with a 2-light casement adjacent to the farmhouse, and a central doorway. Interior: there is an intermediate queen-post truss and also a collar and tie-beam truss with three struts adjacent to the chimney. The purlins are renewed. There are re-used sections of chamfered timber in the ceiling of the half-bay. The north side of the half-bay has been incorporated into the farmhouse and has a large fireplace with a bread oven. The rest of the byre has a cobbled floor and C19 timber stalls, mangers and brick troughs. (RCHM, Herefs, Vol III, 1934, p 29).
