2/194 The Old Vicarage

Former Vicarage, c1840 by James Thomson for Joseph Neeld of Grittleton, squared rubble stone with ashlar dressings and stone slate roofs. Two storeys, picturesque Tudor style with flush stone-mullion windows and round-headed lights to casements. Symmetrical north front, 3-window with raised plinth, first floor string and walling of upper floor slightly set back. Centre projecting porch gable with walling of upper floor slightly projected. Two-light windows each side, lower ones with deep bead- moulded hoodmoulds. Porch bay has Tudor-arched entry and hoodmould, ashlar upper floor and canted oriel with narrow sidelights. Panels below lights, front panel with blank shield. West end stack. East end large square ashlar bay, the stone roof linked to small first floor oriel. Parallel rear range has east end large added bay and oriel, west end stack with 2-light window each floor in chimney projection. Large mullion and transom stair- light between the two west gables. Smaller parallel gable to right and single storey outbuilding connecting to Bridgwater-tiled stable and coach-house. (J. Thomson A History of the Church and Village of Alderton (unpubl.) 1845 78 describes the house as a parsonage for a moderate incumbency with two parlours, study, two bedrooms, kitchen, offices, chaise-house and stables)
