Due to the wall and fencing it was not practical to get any closer to the cross to obtain an image to include the base, the surrounding vegetation is also starting to overgrow the whole of the cross.

The cross looks quite ancient, apparently it is only the base that is medieval, the rest is a 19th century restoration. The only original part is the 13th century base, the rest was destroyed at the reformation. This was a former way-side or funeral cross where coffins were rested on the way to Whalley church. Originally called ‘The White Cross’ or ‘Paslew’s Cross’ after Abbot John Paslew who was born in the village of Wiswell.
