SELBORNE BLACKMOOR SU 73 SE 6/9 Church of St Matthew 31.7.63 II*

Parish church. 1868, by Alfred Waterhouse, for Sir Roundell Palmer (lst Earl of Selborne). Stone and tile. Geometrical Gothic, with bold decorative treatment; aisleless nave of 4 bays, chancel of 2 bays, north vestry, south porch, and west tower. Plain roof, with small triangular lucarnes above the nave. Walls of ashlar malmstone with Bath stone dressings; corbels to the eaves, stepped buttresses linked to moulded impost and cill bands, plinth. Geometrical tracery, 2-light windows to the nave, 3 to the chancel, 5 to east and west windows. Tower of 4 stages, pyramid tile roof, plain parapet above corbels with corner gargoyles, coupled traceried openings to the bell stage, coupled lancets below a circular window (one a clock face), a large west window above a west doorway, buttresses (diagonal at the west corners) and an octagonal south-east stair turret. Gabled south porch, with buttresses. The interior is rich in decoration and fittings, again in full mid-Gothic treatment, with commemorative monuments to the donating family.
