WIGGINTON HEMP LANE SP 91 SW (North side) 4/164 The Orchard - GV II House. C16, brick front of C18 stuccoed with pilasters etc. in mid C19 with W extension, NW rear wing c.1980. Timber frame on flint sill, roughcast but brick fronted with stucco elaboration. Steep old red tile roofs. A 2-storeys L-shaped house, set back from road, facing S. Stucco S front has plinth and corner pilasters, bellcast to eaves, and 3 windows to each floor above one another. Door between RH pair of windows. Flush box sash windows with 8/8 panes on 1st floor and 10/10 panes on ground floor (Yorkshire sliding casement in middle). 4 panel door. Moulded stucco surrounds to ground floor windows and decorative cornice on trusses over door. Canted C19 bay window with hipped roof at E end, and gabled porch into lobby by chimney at junction with 2-storeys NE rear wing. 3-bays timber structure of front range exposed inside, with squint-butted scarf in wallplate, straight wind-braces in clasped-purlin roof, curved braces in higher E bay with collar and queen-strut truss. Axial floor beam with exposed joists. Large rear-wall formerly external chimney to E part is in narrow red bricks with stone base to stack. Large open fireplace in E room. Single-storey W extension formerly used as schoolroom, Baptist Chapel, and tearoom. House formerly called Penley Lodge, and Randall's Cottage.
