Description


CHAWLEIGH SS 61 SE 1/30 Savourys - G.V II House, former farmhouse. Early C17 with mid C19 extension. Main block of plastered cob on rubble footings, extension of exposed rubble; stone rubble stacks topped with C20 brick; thatch roof. Gable-ended 2-room and central staircase plan main block facing south-west with end stacks, that to right (south-east), projecting and with a secondary oven projection. At left (north-west) end the extension with hipped roof projects forward, and is offset. connecting only on the corner. 2 storeys. Irregular 3-window front of different casements of various dates. The 3 first floor and left end ground floor windows are C18 flat-faced mullion 3-light casements containing rectangular panes of leaded glass. Other ground floor windows are C20, right one with leaded glass, the other with glazing bars. C17 porch slightly right of centre has cob walls and hipped roof. Oak outer arch has richly moulded architrave comprising a series of hollow chamfers and fillets. Right side wall includes small lancet fashioned from single piece of oak. The front doorway is also C17, an oak frame with ogee-moulded surround, and contains contemporary studded plank door with strap hinges and oak lock-housing. Rear elevation includes more C18 casements and some C20 replacements, all with similar leaded glass and to rear of right (east) room is a C17 oak 3-light window with flat mullions and relatively shallow corner mouldings, an external hollow and internal ogee. It contains diamond panes of leaded glass, some of them very old and tinged green, and original iron-framed casement with ornate catch. Front of extension has late C19 casements with glazing bars, the ground floor casement with twisted iron security bar. Interior shows mostly C17 features. Right room still has pitched cobble floor and crossbeam has soffit-chamfer with runout stops and rubble fireplace has soffit chamfered and straight cut stopped oak lintel, fireplace to left room has low arched lintel, its soffit chamfered with scroll stops. Original roof structure of A-frame trusses with pegged, lap-jointed collars and dovetail halvings.
