Description

CHULMLEIGH CHULMLEIGH SS 6814-6914 7/39 Hill View 20.2.67 GV II House. Early to mid C17 with C20 internal alterations. Rendered stone rubble and cob. Thatch roof with plain ridge and gable ends. Rendered stack at right end, demolished stack at left end and front lateral hall stack with offsets heightened in brick. Plan: Subsequent alterations, particuarly in C20 have obscured original plan; the two early C17 (clean) trusses are situated over right end and suggest the house may have originated as a 2 room plan with hall heated by front lateral stack to left of possible former cross-passage and lower end to right. Probably in the late C17 the house appears to have been extended to the left to form a third room and the plan reversed, the passage being resited to the left of the hall. The functions of the two end rooms are unclear; the room beyond the hall at the right end appears to have served as a kitchen at least since the C19, while the room at the left end, though panelled on 1 wall, nevertheless retains evidence of an apparent smoking chamber to the left of the fireplace. At some stage, probably in the early C19 the house was divided into 2 occupations, and in C20 the secondary stairs were removed from the rear of the kitchen at right end, and the passage considerably widened by encroaching on the room at the left end, to create a wide entrance hall containing principal staircase also replaced in C20. C20 single storey to outshut to rear. Exterior: 2 storeys. 4 window range. Early C19 fenestration entirely intact, all 3 light casements with small rectangular leaded panes. Shallow verendah with slate roof extends to left and right of, and in line with front lateral stack, supported on C20 timber posts and incorporating C20 entrance porch towards left end with door surround in C17 style. C20 3-light casement inserted in blocked doorway towards right end. Interior Much altered in C20. Some late C17 panelling, probably resited, survives to room at left end extending to full-height of inner partition wall, 3 1/2 panels high with scratch moulded stiles and rails and incorporating panelled door with H-L hinges. Chamfered fireplace lintel. Cupboard to left has ceiling meat-hooks and probably served as a smoking chamber. Single chamfered cross-ceiling beam to hall; hall fireplace rebuilt in C20. C17 ovolo-moulded 4-centred arched door surround to small single storey outshut to rear right end, also possibly reused. Roof: 2 raised cruck trusses over right end with two tiers of threaded purlins, the morticed and tenoned collars removed. No evidence of smoke-blackening. 3 trusses over left end have straight principals and pegged lapped collars.
