Station Master's house, now house. c1846. By G T Andrews for George Hudson's Great North of England Railway. Sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings, Welsh slate roof. L-shaped plan. 2 storeys, 1:1:1 bays with rear wing to left. Plinth. Quoins. First-floor string course. Central gabled bay breaks forward slightly and has board door in quoined triangular- headed surround with sunk spandrels and hood-mould stepped up to string and containing carving of parchment scroll. Quoined surrounds to mullion windows, of 3 lights on ground floor, and 2 lights on first floor, that in central bay with relieving arch. Gable over first bay has decorative bargeboards and apex finial and pendant. Central gable has octagonal crenellated finial. Finials also to left and right ends. Square and octagonal stack between second and third bays, also at junction of main house with rear wing. Interior: original doors, window shutters, fireplaces and staircase. One of an important surviving group of railway buildings.
