BRAMPTON MAIN ROAD SK37SW 1264-0/2/108 (North side) 31/01/67 Cutthorpe Old Hall (Formerly Listed as: CUTTHORPE Cutthorpe Old Hall, Old Hall Cottage, Old Manor House) II*

Manor house. Circa 1625, with late C17 additions and some C19 alterations. Coursed squared Coal Measures Sandstone with ashlar dressings, rising from low moulded plinth. Quoined corners, moulded gable copings and kneelers, a single stone gable stack to the north-west gable, and a stone slated roof. 2-cell plan, with attached stair tower to south-west side. 3 elevations are gabled, as is the stair tower, and both are 3 storeyed with attics. A 2-storey range, part of the attached cottage, continues behind the 2-cell range, and there is a C18 single-storey addition to the north-east. Each floor is delineated by continuous string courses which step up over doorway and window openings, as hood moulds. South-east elevation of 2 bays, with 2 tall 3-light chamfered mullioned windows to ground floor, 2 shallower 3-light openings to first floor, and a 3-light window with a drip mould to the second floor. South-east elevation of stair tower formerly with a 2-light mullioned window, and a single-light opening, the 2 openings separated by a narrow panel of masonry, which at ground-floor level has been removed to contrive a fourth light, giving the ground floor a 4-light window. First and second floors retain separated openings. Attic floor with 2-light chamfered mullioned windows beneath a drip moulding. South-west elevation to the main range has a moulded door surround at the angle of the two ranges, with a massive chamfered lintel and a plain planked door to the side of the doorway, beneath a continuous string course, a blocked former 2-light mullioned opening, which at some time had been enlarged to form another doorway, which pierced the plinth. 2-bay range to rear, with first-floor 2-light chamfered mullioned window to north-east gable. C18 single-storey addition with coped gable, and a re-used timber head to a 3-light mullioned window. INTERIOR: stair tower has a framed and boarded newel staircase, terminating in a small blind landing at attic level. The main range has moulded plasterwork to ground and first floors with cornices and moulded spine beams, disturbed by later partitioning. At second floor level the tie beam of the central roof truss is exposed, and appears steeply cambered. Ground and first floor hearths have moulded stone surrounds. History:; Cutthorpe Old Hall was built by Alderman Ralph Clark of Chesterfield, d. 1660.
