PAPPLEWICK off BLIDWORTH WAYE SK 55 SW Formerly Main Street 1/120 (west side) 14.5.52 Papplewick Hall G.V. I Country house. c.1785 with mid C19 alterations. For the Hon. Frederick Montague. Ashlar with hipped salte roof. Plinth, rusticated quoins, first floor and sill bands, cornice and blocking course. 2 roof stacks. 3 storeys plus basement, 5 bays wide by 4 bays deep. Windows are glazing bar sashes, some with round heads. West front has stepped forward pedimented central bay. Basement has 5 square sashes. Rusticated ground floor has 3 round headed recesses with sashes, flanked by single sashes with moulded surrounds and cornices. Above, 5 sashes alternating with pilasters. Central sash has cornice on scroll brackets. Above again, 5 square sashes. To left, single storey billiard room, mid C20, with parapet and short balustrade. Central French window with keystoned rusticated surround, flanked by glazed door and French window. North side has 2 sashes. South side has to left 2 dummy sashes and to right, 2 sashes. Above, 4 sashes. Above again, 2 square sashes flanked by single blank panels. East side has central rusticated flat roofed porch, mid C19. Central door with plain fanlight. On each side, a round headed plain sash. Flanked by rusticated panels each with a blank tablet. Beyond, single basement windows with segmental heads. Above them, single sashes. Above, projecting central section flanked by paired Ionic pilasters. Pedimented central sash with shouldered architrave and balustraded apron, flanked by single sashes. Above again, 3 square sashes, the central one with eared architrave. Inner door has rusticated apsidal surround, mid C19 glazed doors, and C18 traceried fanlight. Interior has Adam style Classical decoration. Principal rooms have chair rails, modillioned or dentillated cornices, and Classical timber fireplaces. Entrance hall has curved north wall. Curved cantilevered stone stair with iron balustrade and scrolled, ramped handrail. Drawing room doorcase has bracketed cornice. Landing has triglyph dado. Top landing door has scalloped head and fanlight. Dining room west end has Classical marble and granite fireplace flanked by single panels with wreaths and swags. West end has apsidal niche containing mirror and sconce, flanked by single panels with wreaths. 2 doors with bracketed cornices. Frieze with sphinx motifs. Oval ceiling panel with grapevine border. Drawing room has basket grate with scallop panelled cheeks, flanked by single doors with carved friezes. Plaster wall panels. Oval ceiling panel with high-relief sphinxes in borders 2 wall mirrors with ornate gilt frames. Library has curved north wall and round headed book compartments. Palmette frieze and oval ceiling panel with oak leaf border. Mid C19 fireplace and above it, half-round panel with urn. To its left, disguised door. Fitted pedimented bookcase. Above, single rectangular and 4 round relief panels. Billiard room has panelled coved ceiling. 3 round headed glazed cupboards, 2 with bronze grilles below. Morning room, now kitchen, has curved wall with central niche flanked by single doors. Coved ceiling. Fireplace has terra cotta overmantel panel by Flaxman, c.1780. Cantilevered stone dogleg service stair has iron balusters and ramped handrail. First floor bedroomms have moulded cornices and Classical timber fireplaces with mid C19 register grates and 2 early C19 hob grates. Second floor bedrooms have moulded cornices and plain fireplaces with C19 hob and register grates.
