Description

SPOFFORTH WITH STOCKELD HAGGS LANE SE 35 SE 3/110 Aketon Close GV II House. Circa 1905. In the Vernacular Revival style. Rock faced stone with ashlar dressings and stone slate roofs. 4 tall stacks. Crow-stepp'ed gables and battlemented parapet. 2 storey plus attics. East, entrance front 3 bay with slightly projecting central tower. Central doorway within segment headed arch incorporating small side lights. To the left a single 3 light mullion case- ment. Above a central similar window with another similar window to the left, and a small 2 light mullion window to the right. Above in the tower a further 3 light mullion casement. South, garden front, has recessed centre and projecting side wings. Large central 3 x 4 cross mullion window rising through 2 floors. Above a 4 light flat roofed dormer. The right wing has a 2 storey round bay window with a 5 light mullion casement on each floor. The left wing has a canted projecting chimney stack with 2 small'single light casements on each floor. West front has off-centre projecting gabled wing with a 2 storey square bay window with a 4 light cross mullion window and to the right a single light casement above a 4 light mullion window. To the left a projecting canted chim- ney stack and 2 narrow casements. Interior. The original interior of this building survives largely intact with original panelled and plank doors through- out. Dining room has stone arched inglenook and 4 centred arched fireplace, wooden Doric pilasters and wooden dado panelling and exposed stone frieze. Drawing room has inglenook with Adam style Ionic plaster surround, fireplace and coving plus dado panelling in the bay. Morning room has segment arched ingle- nook with moulded ashlar fireplace and Delft tiles. Unusual plaster coving with fleurons. Hall has unusual Gothic arched fireplace, and stone staircase leading off, above a 3 sided gallery with turned 'barley sugar' balusters. Bedrooms also have good quality contemporary tiled fireplaces.
