Group of 3 chest tombs to members of Eden family. Mid C18 to early C19. Ashlar and marble. (i): adjacent to church wall. c1755. Ogee-moulded plinth to large plain sided sandstone chest. Moulded edge to top slab, probably of marble. Inscription to Sir Robert Eden d.1755 aged 36, his wife Mary d.1794 aged 73. (ii): immediately E of (i). c1790. Plain plinth to 6 tapered fluted pilasters with plinths and Ionic capitals, with recessed plain slabs between, supporting top slab with moulded edge. Inscription to Harriett Eden d.1789 aged 5, another 2-year old daughter of Sir John Eden, and Caroline Eden (date illegible). Verse (..an unspotted life...) and inscription partly eroded. (iii): 3m N of (i). c1766. Table with moulded plinth, 4 bombe angle pilasters with simple plinths and necking, and round-edged top slab. Inscription to Catherine Eden d.1766 aged 23, wife of Sir John Eden Bart. of Windlestone, and to Dorothea his second wife, d.1792 aged 45, and also to Sir John d.1812 aged 71. The Eden family lived at West Auckland Manor for many years before moving to Windlestone Hall.
