CHERITON FITZPAINE RECTORY HILL, Cheriton Fitzpaine SS 80 NE 7/43 - The Manor House - II

House, former rectory. Late C17, much rebuilt and extended circa 1850. Plastered rubble with some cob; rubble stacks with C19 brick chimney shafts; slate roofs. Large house with irregular plan. Main block faces east with smaller and narrower parallel range behind and crosswing on right (north) end projects forward. Axial stack to crosswing and main block has end stacks and another axial stack south of centre in valley of parallel roofs. Main stairs in end of rear wing next to crosswing. 2 storeys with attics to main range and crosswing. Regular but not symmetrical 6-window front to main block comprising mid C19 large pane sashes with single glazing bars to first floor and single pane sashes to ground floor. Ground floor left (south) has mid-late C19 projecting bay of single pane sashes curving glass corner windows, dentil cornice and simply moulded entablature. At left end of bay window brick wall with sandstone ball cap. Most of window glass throughout is original. Main door right of centre. Mid C19 6-panel door under fanlight with radial pattern of glazing bars. Low pitch gabled timber porch with plain entablature along sides and Doric columns. Front of wing has hipped roof, similar fenestration to main front and service door to right. Outer side of wing has symmetrical 3-window front of C19 small pane casements with glazing bars, gabled dormer to attics and roof hipped each end. Irregular rear elevation includes round-headed sash with Gothick glazing bars to stair, and other sashes and casements with glazing bars. 4 panel rear door and flat hood on shaped brackets. Main block attics are lit by rear facing dormers with glazing bars. One attic pane is inscribed by diamond 'W Wotton, Glazier, August 29th 1850'. Interior shows mostly C19 features and roof is entirely C19. Only obvious evidence of surviving early structure is fine late C17 dog-leg stair - square section newels with moulded caps, closed string, flat-moulded handrail and turned balusters.
