CHERITON FITZPAINE CHERITON FITZPAINE SS 80 NE 7/24 Lower Saunders - 26.8.65 GV II

House. C16 with C17 improvements. Plastered cob on rubble footings; rubble stacks; thatched roof. Originally a 3- or 4-room-and-through-passage plan house facing road to south with inner room at left (west) end. There was apparently a lobby between hall and inner room with newel stair in projecting turret to rear. Projecting end stack to inner room (now disused) and projecting rear lateral stack to hall. 2 storeys. Irregular 5 window front of late C19 and C20 copy casement windows with glazing bars. Passage door towards right end under C20 thatch-gabled hood. Roof is half-hipped to right and gable-ended to left and carried over the top of the stack. Secondary door left end and C20 window of leaded panes. Rear includes a small light with old leaded glass and some small blocked window embrasures. Interior: the oldest structure apparent shows in the roof. 2 C16 closed trusses at western end. The western, over lobby-inner room partition, may never have been filled above collar level as roof appears smoke-blackened either side. C18 or C19 roof over hall, passage and service end. On ground floor any passage screen and hall-lobby partition have been removed. Cob crosswall to service end. Service room has plain-chamfered axial beam. Hall has C17 crossbeam, chamfered with scroll stops and contemporary rubble fireplace, its oak lintel has plain chamfer on slightly curved soffit. Inner room has late C17-early C18 axial beam, chamfered with runout stops.
