Description

SP 9432-9532 WOBURN LONDON ROAD 9/125 Speedwell Farmhouse 22.10.52 - II House. Probably late C17 in origin, reworked 1795-1802 for the Bedford estate under direction of Robert Salmon (J M Robinson, "Farming on a Princely Scale", Architectural Review, November 1976, p279). H-plan, 2 storeys and attics. E cross-wing bordering with moulding coping to both ends of E cross-wing and to end of it cross-wing. S elevation: each cross-wing has one window per floor, those to RH wing off-centre. Central sashes of varying width, with glazing bars and set in plain reveals. Central block has one hipped dormer containing small-paned 2-light casement. Doorway to RH, next to junction with cross-wing. Part-glazed door under C19 timber open porch with sloping roof. Colourwashed ridge stack to centrala block, at junction with cross-wing. Road elevation: first floor band, continuing around RH end. Ground and first floor each have 3 sashes with glazing bars in plain reveals. Attic has 2 hipped dormers containing small-paned casements. Integral stack to RH N elevaton: 2 storeyed gabled addition within E angle, and various lean-to additions.
