CLAPTON-ON-THE-HILL CLAPTON VILLAGE SP 11 NE 2/31 Newbridge House GV II

Former farmhouse adjoining Upper Farmhouse (q.v.). Coursed squared and dressed limestone of various different periods. Stone slate roof, ashlar stacks (probably C20). Mid C17, substantially restored mid C19. Long rectangular plan to main body formerly with cross passage. Small C19 extension parallel to main body at rear. Small outbuilding projects forwards right of main entrance front. Two storeys and attic, lit by three 2-light C20 roof dormers. Five-windowed facade; mostly 2, 3 and 4-light casements with horizontal glazing bars within segmental-headed surrounds. C20 part-glazed front door far right inserted within surround of double-chamfered hollow-moulded stone-mullioned casement. Original entrance (now blocked) lay off-centre left now with 3-light window inserted. C19 part-glazed plank door within flat-chamfered Tudor- arched surround in rear wall, formerly opening into cross passage. C20 three-light window with central sash window and concrete lintel right of Tudor-arched door surround. Similar smaller window to first floor. Single light with flat-chamfered stone surround and 2-light stone-mullioned casement in gable end of main body. C19 extension at rear lit by 2 and 3-light casements within segmental- headed surrounds. Single-storey outbuilding at right angles to entrance front with 2-light stone-mullioned casement with unusual stepped moulding. Interior; tie beams with moulded stops. Two open fireplaces with bressumer beams; one with moulded stops and a 'keystone'-like carved decoration at centre of beam and 2 inglenook seats. Open fireplace in far left-hand room has semi-circular curing chamber area to right of fireplace. Two-light hollow-moulded stone- mullioned casements in rear wall (now no longer visible from outside). Upper right-hand room with spine beam.
