Description

CHULMLEIGH EAST STREET, (south side), SS 6814 -6914 Chulmleigh 7/63 Dunns GV II House, at one time in 2 occupations and now old people's home. Early C19, with C20 alterations and rear extension. Unrendered stone rubble. Asbestos slate roof with gable end brick stacks and shaped bargeboards. Plan: Plan largely altered in C20 but appears to have originally consisted of 2 houses, with an overall symmetrical plan of 3 principal rooms divided by entrance passages, but with the division between the 2 houses occuring at the left end of the central room. The smaller house to the left, therefore, was single-fronted, with a principal room, probably originally axially partitioned to form a kitchen at the rear, to the left of entrance passage containing staircase now running from back to front. The double-fronted house to the right has its staircase to the rear of the right-hand room; in C20 the left-hand room was axially partitioned towards the rear to create a connecting corridor between the 2 houses when converted into single occupation. C20 lean-to and flat-roofed extensions to rear. Exterior: 2 storeys. 5 window range. Symmetrical. C19 fenestration with 16 paned sashes to outer and central bays flanking sashes with margin glazing bars over 2 C19 doorcases, the pilasters with chanelled Greek key motifs, with overlight and 4- panelled doors. Interior. Largely altered in C20 but some C19 joinery and dado tongue and groove panelling survives. Left-hand room has chamfered cross ceiling beam and plain timber fireplace lintel.
