Estate cottage. Circa 1750 by Thomas Wright of Durham. Rendered; hipped thatched roof which overhangs and sweeps down to form a pentice which is supported on arch braced rustic timber piers thus forming an 'umbrello'; ashlar stack. Gothick cottage orne. Single storey and attics in dormers which are cut out of the thatch. 4 windows and central door on ground floor, single window to each elevation in the attic; 3- and 2-light casements with depressed ogee headed tracery and diamond and square lead glazing patterns. Central door with depressed ogee headed tracery; two taller timber uprights of the pentice form a porch with a thatched roof set below the attic window. Single storey thatched extension at the north end. An early example of cottage orne idea and one of Wright's most important works for the 4th Duke of Beaufort in the period 1748-1756.
