Description

CROXDALE AND HETT CROXDALE HALL NZ 2737 17/51 North and east courtyard ranges and walls, to east of Croxdale Hall GV II 2 ranges of courtyard buildings and linking wall. Early-mid C18 north range altered in early C19. Mid C19 east range and wall. Squared sandstone with purple slate roofs. Rebuilt brick chimney stacks. Ranges enclose north and east sides of courtyard with wall between them at north-east corner. Long north range, one storey and loft; 14 openings on ground floor. Early C19 wide segmental entrance archway and 4 smaller, similar archways, with boarded double doors, at west. Former smithy near centre has boarded door and fixed window of 5 vertical lights. 3 boarded doors and 3 partly-glazed hit-and-miss windows at east. 6 small 2-light loft windows, with flat-faced mullions, set immediately under eaves. Steeply-pitched roof hipped at west. Central ridge stack above smithy. Tall, flat-coped section of linking wall with large central doorway. Single-storey east range of 2 builds: 4 and 2 bays, with straight joint at junction. Openings in flush surrounds with alternating jambs. 4-bay section has boarded doors in end bays and two 6-pane sashes between. 2-bay section has 2 boarded doors with small top-hung casements above. Continuous low-pitched hipped roof with stone ridge tiles. Tall off- centre ridge stack. Included for group value. Adjoining wall across courtyard at right-angles near centre of north range and wall on south return of east range are not of special interest.
