PARISH OF ECKINGTON SOUTHGATE SK 4379 11/121 (East Side) Southgate Old House 31.1.67 II House. Mid C17. Coursed coal measures sandstone with quoins, coped gables with moulded kneelers, ridge stack and single roll Roman tiled roof covering. Central lobby entrance plan, with single storey contemporary range to west end rear wall, and additions to rear at east end. Single storey and attics, three bays, twin gabled front, each gable with a 2-light chamfer mullioned window, and a single light window beneath a continuous dripmoulding. Central doorway with chamfered quoined surround, and slightly cambered soffit to lintel. Flanking the doorway to the east, a 3-light window, to the west a 4-light window and a 2-light window, all beneath dripmoulds, and all with glazing bar casements. West end with inserted glazed doors to ground floor, and C19 extensions to rear. Gabled end to street with 2-light chamfer mullioned window to attic floor. Three stone spouts lead rainwater away from the front elevation. Interior. Two cruck trusses survive, with single purlins, which have mortices for windbraces. Ground floor hearth to west end room has complex moulding to hearth bressumer, and a heck post. To the north of, and adjoining the house, a single storey two bay range at right angles to the main house, with a single doorway, and a blocked 2-light chamfer mullioned window. This range contains two further cruck trusses and a C17 hearth.
