Description

COLDRIDGE COLDRIDGE SS 60 NE 1/33 - The Old Cottage and The Cottage GV II

2 cottages, formerly a single house. Late C16-early C17 with C17 alterations and probably C18 subdivision. C20 extension to The Cottage. Plastered cob on rubble footings; stone rubble stacks topped with C19 and C20 brick; thatch roof and slate to C20 work. 2 adjoining cottages in a much-altered 3-room-and-through-passage plan house facing south. The Cottage at the right (east) end occupies the former service room with C20 rebuilt outshots and single storey extension set back from front on right end. Former service room has end stack. The Old Cottage occupies hall, passage and inner room of the original house although the layout has been much altered. The original passage at the right end (adjoining The Cottage) has been disused and the hall-passage screen removed. A passage has been inserted at the upper end of the hall. The hall has a projecting front lateral stack. The former inner room end was apparently rebuilt in C18 at the time of subdivision and now comprises one domestic room and a narrow store at the end, the former served by an axial stack. The range once continued further left (west). 2 storeys. Main block has overall irregular 4-window front, the 3 to The Old Cottage being C20 casements with glazing bars, the 1 to The Cottage C20 casements with leaded glass and including a C20 bay window. The doorway to The Old Cottage (to left of the hall stack) is C20 behind contemporary monopitch and slate-roofed porch. The hall stack projection is carried left as far as the former inner room. Roof is gable- ended to left and a very steep, almost vertical, hip at right end. A window and door in C20 extension to The Cottage. Interior. The only late C16-early Cl7 feature exposed in The Cottage is the rubble fireplace with soffit-chamfered and late step stopped oak lintel. The plain joist ceiling is probably C20. The roof here is inaccessible. In The Old Cottage there is a late C16-early C17 half beam in the original passage area which is also soffit-chamfered with late step stops. The hall fireplace of about the same time is rubble-built and although the soffit of the oak lintel has been cut away it is noteworthy having a mantle shelf with coved soffit cut from the same timber. The crossbeam here is C17, deeply soffit-chamfered with large scroll stops. No early features show at the inner room end except a probably C18 A-frame truss with pegged lap-jointed collar. Roof elsewhere is inaccessible.
