COLDRIDGE COLDRIDGE SS 60 NE 1/31 - Tor Cottage and Whitehall GV II

2 cottages, originally one house. Early C17, subdivided with extensions in C18, both modernised circa 1970-80. Plastered cob on rubble footings; cob stacks topped with C20 brick; thatch roof and Whitehall has slate-roofed extension. 2 adjoining cottages facing south. Tor Cottage to left (west) is 2 rooms with service outshot at left end. The stack now serves back-to-back fireplaces but it is of 2 builds. The right room was originally the end room of the C17 house and in the C18, probably when the house was subdivided, another room was added and a new fireplace provided. Whitehall to right (east) has an original 2-room front block with central axial stack serving back-to-back fireplaces and an C18 extension at right angles to rear with end stack. Both are 2 storeys. Overall 5-window front, 2 to Tor Cottage and 3 to Whitehall, all C20 casements with glazing bars and irregularly disposed. Tor Cottage has C20 front door with contemporary monopitch and slate roofed porch and Whitehall has a C19 part-glazed and panelled front door with C20 monopitch and tile roofed porch. Roof is gable- ended to right and hipped to left. Left end service outshot has monopitch roof of corrugated iron. Rear block of Whitehall has a gable-ended roof. Interior: the 3 original fireplaces are all stone rubble with soffit-chamfered and scroll-stopped oak lintels. Tor Cottage fireplace includes a cloam oven. In Tor Cottage the C17 ceiling structure has been replaced and the roof, a single bay between cob crosswalls, is inaccessible but probably original. In Whitehall both of the main rooms have original crossbeams of large scantling. Both are soffit- chamfered with truncated pyramid stops. In the right end room the fireplace has an inserted or relined oven with the winder stair rising over it. Each of the first floor rooms has a 2-bay roof, each carried on an A-frame truss with pegged dovetail-shaped lap-jointed collars. In fact the principals are mortised arid pegged onto vertical posts set into the cob side walls; a kind of devolved jointed cruck. The Whitehall extension has a roughly-chamfered axial beam and a similarly finished oak lintel to the fireplace. The 2-bay roof is carried on an C18 A-frame truss with pegged lap-jointed collar and X-apex.
