House, now shop. Probably late C17 with later additions and alterations including refronting and shop front with extensions to rear c1830-50; further later extensions. Timber-framed with wattle and daub and brick infill and stucco facade, concealed roof with red brick left stack and iron window guards. PLAN: originally 2 bays, then with range to rear added at right and staircase added to left. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with attic, 2 first-floor windows. First floor has 1/1 sashes. Ground floor has Victorian shop front: 3 plate-glass windows bordered by pilasters with sunk panels, similar pilasters to ends have acanthus corbel brackets; frieze and cornice with fleurons. Off-centre right entrance: part-glazed door within cambered-arched opening. Passage at left with bressumer over has further entrance within, 3-panel door. Rear has overhang on iron post. INTERIOR: evidence of timber-framing includes roughly chamfered tie-beam and further spine beam and rear beam at left. To first floor a main post to rear wall is visible. reputed to have panels of wattle and daub to right wall. C19 dogleg staircase has stick balusters and run-out handrail. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: window guards to first floor have rope moulding. HISTORICAL NOTE: during the C17 and C18 a series of timber-framed dwellings were ranged along the High Street. This is a notable survival of the pre-Spa town, together with The Restoration Inn (No.57) and No.54 High Street (qqv).
