UPTON WITH FISHLEY TG 31 SE 1/80 Church of St. Mary, 25.9.62. Fishley. II* Parish church. Late C13, much restored in 1861; C12 west tower. Flint with limestone dressings; slate roofs, continuous over nave and chancel. West tower, nave, chancel, south porch, north aisle. Round west tower with C15 brick top and castellated parapet. Single-light cusped bell openings at cardinal points. Lower openings blocked in brick on south, east and west sides. Small west lancet. Romanesque south doorway with colonnettes with scalloped capitals and billet-moulded hood mould. Two 2-light windows with 'Y' tracery in south wall of nave; single lancet in south wall of chancel; two staged buttresses. East window of three lights with cusped 'Y' tracery. Elongated quatrefoil in gable above east window. Single lancet in north wall of chancel. Circular quatrefoiled window in east wall of north aisle. Two small lancets and blocked medieval doorway in north wall. Semi-circular unmoulded tower arch with smaller semi-circular headed opening above and elongated quatrefoil opening to tower. No north arcade : wallplate boarded over and supported on central iron column. South wall of chancel has piscina with petalled bowl and two stepped sedilia in arched recess. Roofs and fittings C19. Circular font on central shaft with purbeck supporting columns.
