NUNEATON AND BEDWORTH ANSLEY ROAD SP39SW (South side) Stockingford 1/6 Single Tower Farmhouse and attached walls - II

Farmhouse and attached walls. Mid/late C18, with some C19 alterations. Probably built for Sir Roger Newdigate of Arbury Hall. Sandstone rubble; rear of raking Flemish bond brick. Plain-tile roofs; tower has flat roof and coped parapet. Brick ridge and internal stacks. L-plan, with wing on left to rear and round tower to angle. Very simple Gothic style tower. 2 storeys and 3-storey tower; 4-window range. Front is at right angles to road. Tower has arched openings. C19 half-glazed 4-panelled door and overlight, and fanlight with glazing bars. Second floor has window of 2 fixed lights. Lower round stair turret attached to left has small arched casements. Central 2-window range has C19 four-panelled door and hipped plain-tile hood on chamfered brackets. 3-light casements to right and first floor. All openings have chamfered stone surrounds. Windows throughout have glazing bars. Left range forms sham square tower: second floor with coped parapet is a screen wall, with internal stack behind it. Ground floor has segmental-arched one-light casement in chamfered stone surround. Left return side has similar 3-light mullioned windows. Right return side to road has wing of one storey and attic with gable dormer, and one- and two-light plain casements. Tower has 2-light straight-headed casement and arched window above. Rear is irregular. Interior has circular rooms to tower; ground-floor room has moulded wood cornice above fireplace. Winder stairs. Room in 2-storey range has large open fireplace. Walls attached at right angles to tower and left return side have coping and doorways with stone lintels. (Buildings of England: Warwickshire, p71)
