Workhouse, now retirement housing. Dated 1837 on parapet. Converted to flats and cottages 1984. Red brick; front faced on limestone ashlar. Slate roof; both stone and brick chimneys. Complex plan; front range and separate single storey pavilions with linking walls; behind, 4 wings radiating from central octagon, with single range attached at right angles at opposite end to front range. Severe simple classical style. Front range 3 storeys; 11-window range. Central 5 bays project. Heavy porch with corner piers, cornice and parapet, with late C20 door inside. Late C20 imitation sashes with glazing bars. First floor has sill band. Simple cornice. Centre has parapet with inscription. Single storey pavilions have recessed centre with single window. Pediment with small circular opening. Linking wall has pedestrian opening with basket arch. Rear, octagon and wings have ground floor rendered to half-height. Tile roofs. 3-storey octagon and 2-storey wings; 6-window range, one wing 4-window. Octagon has windows in re-entrant sides. Late C20 casements with glazing bars, doors and porches. Gauged brick flat arches. Octagon has hipped roof and square cupola. Canted angles with sunk panels. South west face has clock; other faces have round arched louvred openings. Lead roof and weathervane with scrollwork. Cupola and weathervane said to be C17, from Studley Castle. Interior not inspected. Inscription on parapet states that the stone was the gift of Sir Charles Throckmorton.
