History

The row of cottages is probably of C18 origin and considerably altered in 1857 when they became estate dwellings for the Kinmel Estate. Further altered in 1972 when the row was sold by the estate and individual cottages were combined to provide larger dwellings; these alterations altered the plan-form and added extensions to the rear whilst retaining at the front the historic character of the original row.

Exterior

Belongs to a group of 5 comprising nos 4, 5, 6, 6A and 7 Church Street, St George. Built of rubble stonework, now painted, with slate roofs. Each cottage was originally of one bay, with lateral door, and one 3-light window to the ground floor living room, its upper corners rounded and set under a cambered flush relieving arch. On the upper floor, two small 2-light windows. Brick stacks on the party walls. In 1972 alterations individual cottages were combined resulting in broader frontages and greater internal space but with limited change to the detail of the main elevation.
• No.4 has central boarded door with cantilevered slate-roofed porch, with flanking rectangular 3-light windows, blocked doorway to right, and four 2-light windows at first floor.
• No.5 (Ivy Cottage) has central boarded door with cantilevered slate-roofed porch, with flanking rectangular 3-light windows, blocked doorway to right and four 2-light windows at first floor.
• No.6 has central boarded door reached by steps, with flanking rectangular 3-light windows, and two 2-light windows at first floor.
• No.6a has central boarded door, with flanking 3-light window to left and 2-light camber-headed window to right, and two 2-light windows at first floor.
