Description

An earlier 19^th-century single-storey and attic cottage constructed of rubble stone with margins and droved dressings and a slated roof. It consists of three bays with a central door and single off-centre dormer window. There is a south wing with piended eaves dormer and a single-storey north wing with a tripartite window.

There is a boundary wall with metal railings and pyramidal-capped gate piers to Tay Street. At the south end is a higher rubble stone wall with a wall-mounted cast-iron post box with 'VR' insignia, which dates from around 1880 and was manufactured by Eagle, Range and Foundry Company of Birmingham.

Statement of Interest

Seacraig, 66 Tay Street, and its ancillary features meet the criteria for listing for the following reasons:

• It is a good representative example of a traditional 19th-century domestic building that retains its historic character, particularly to the front elevation.
• The building is well-detailed and shows features of definite architectural quality, including the skews, the corniced chimneystacks, the treatment of the openings and the boundary features.
• The building was extended in the mid-19th century but these additions contribute to its historic character, and the external form and appearance appears to have remained largely unaltered since this time.
• Its 19th century setting overlooking the Tay, is largely intact and it forms part of an architecturally and historically significant group of other historic buildings of similar date and type. The boundary wall and post box adds to the special interest of the building and its setting.
• It dates to the early 19th century and is good representative example of its prolific building type.
• The wall-mounted post box dates to the 1870s and is a comparatively rare and early example that remains largely unchanged.
