Description

50 Cameron Street (Keith Cottage) was built before 1823. It is a single-storey and attic, three-bay, detached cottage with a symmetrical (classical) frontage of squared and coursed orange/red sandstone rubble. It has a deep-set central doorway with recessed steps, a panelled timber door, and a rectangular transom light with a decorative astragal pattern.

Windows to the flanking bays are timber sash and case with a 12-pane glazing pattern. There is an 8-pane glazing pattern to the polygonal-roofed canted dormers set within roof pitch.

The roof has a grey slate covering. There are two coped ashlar gable-end stacks with clay cans (the stack to the right is shorter with thackstanes at the base). The ashlar-coped skews have moulded cavetto stops.

There are interior fixtures and fittings of 19^th century character, including a stair with curving timber banister and ornate cornicing to the principal ground floor rooms.

Cameron Street formed part of the new town of Stonehaven, laid out by Robert Barclay of Ury in 1797 on the estate of Arduthie which had been purchased by his father in 1759.

The building is understood to have been extended to the rear prior to 2005.

50 Cameron Street meets the criteria for listing for the following reasons:

• For its good quality masonry construction, details and symmetrical character, that are typical of late 18th and early 19th century town cottages.
• For its prominent location on a principal thoroughfare in Stonehaven, grouping well with other listed buildings of a similar age and building type including 1-4 Ardley Terrace.
• As an early and now rare example of a single storey detached town cottage in Stonehaven that substantially retains its 19th century dimensions and historic character.
• For its contribution to our understanding of the development of the early new town of Stonehaven
