Father Charles Gordon (also known as Priest Gordon) founded St Peter's Roman Catholic School, originally located in Constitution Street, in 1833. This commemorative statue was made in 1859 by Alexander Brodie of Aberdeen (1829-1867).
The school relocated to Nelson Street in 1937 and the statue was set within a central niche on the school's front elevation with an inscribed plaque below (the school building was demolished in 1984).
In 1983 the school was relocated to its current location between King Street and Dunbar Street and the statue was placed within the school grounds, fronting King Street.
The previous listed building record notes the sculptor is sometimes given as Alexander Macdonald, meaning the statue may have been carved from a model with finishing by Brodie.
