History

The iron milestone at SP49069 93416 is located on the junction of Leicester Road and Grace Road in Sapcote, Leicestershire.

The milestone is understood to have been erected in the early-C19 by the Burbage and Narborough Turnpike Trust. Turnpike trusts were encouraged to erect such mile-markers during the mid-C18, increasing their prevalence, however this is the only surviving example of the historic group of four milestones.

The design of the milestone is attributed to Joseph Illston, an iron moulder working in nearby Leicester. It is understood to have been moved from its original location on the opposite side of the junction with Grace Road following the demolition of Ivy House Farm in 1967.
