School. 1872-73, with mid C20 additions and alterations including entrance range to east. Architect, John Middleton. Gothic Revival, Early Decorated style. Rough-faced coursed limestone with grey and green stone dressings and double-pitch tiled roof. Double pile plan. EXTERIOR: single tall storey, 4 bays with apse. Offset buttresses. Entrance in C20 range to east end; above are 3-light windows with Geometric-type tracery to head in pointed-arched, hollow-moulded surrounds and alternately coloured voussoirs to head, to each gable and with quatrefoils above. Stone copings to gables. Sides, alike: four 3-cusped-light straight-headed windows with hollow-moulded mullions in double-chamfered surrounds. Apse has 2-light windows with Geometric-type tracery to heads in pointed surrounds with alternately coloured voussoirs to head, a gable to each facet of the apse; blocked doorway. 2 roof dormers to each side with 3-light casements, between cusped triangular vents. Bell turret to west. Cylindrical chimney to east. Decorative ridge tiles. INTERIOR: rich polychroming on timber work; 4 braced collar trusses in each isle, complex roof structure in 'apse', and on panelled frieze below wall plate. HISTORICAL NOTE: built to complement Middleton's Church of the Holy Apostles (qv), the drinking fountain, London Road (qv) forms part of the group. John Middleton was responsible for designing several of the churches in Cheltenham, including Church of All Saints, All Saints' Road; Church of St Mark, Church Road; Church of St Philip and St James, Gratton Road; Church of St Stephen, St Stephen's Road (qqv).
