Formerly known as: The Star and Garter Hotel, KING'S ROAD. Hotel, now public house. Mid C18 to early C19, expanded in mid C19. This listing includes only the range which returns along Little East Street to the party wall with No.11 Little East Street (not included), that is, from the range which contains the entrance aedicule incorporating a date stone marked "1750". Stucco. Gambrel roof of slate over section nearest party wall with No.11 Little East Street; the rest of the roof parapeted.

EXTERIOR: three storeys and attic over basement.Four-window range. A flat-arched entrance on the Little East Street return is set in an aedicule consisting of a pair of Tuscan columns with an entablature, the frieze of which bears the somewhat earlier date stone noted above. The rear elevation curves parallel with Little East Street. Another flat-arched entrance at party wall with No.11; a segmental-arched entrance near the corner. Storey band between the first and second floors; entablature band below parapet. All windows are flat arched. One sliding sash to dormer in gambrel roof with 6 x 6 sashes of an original late C18 or early C19 design. Stacks to party walls.

INTERIOR: not inspected.

HISTORICAL NOTE: known originally as the Star and Garter Hotel, this inn and public house was dubbed Dr Brighton's in the C19. Many celebrities and public figures have stayed in the hotel: Jack Dempsey, Charlie Chaplin, Richard Burton, and the Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII).
