Description

GREAT TEW B4022 SP3929 (East side) 10/17 Leys Farmhouse 27/08/56 (Formerly listed as The Leys Farmhouse and Barn) GV II Farmhouse. C17, altered and extended C18 and early C19. Coursed squared marlstone rubble with ashlar dressings; thatch and Stonesfield-slate roofs with limestone-ashlar stacks. 3-unit lobby-entry plan extended to T-plan. 2 storeys plus attic; 4-window front has a blocked early C19 ashlar porch, to left of centre, with an arched doorway and a quatrefoil in the gable. To left is an early C19 stone-mullioned window of 3 lights with label, and the casement to right also has a label; to extreme right a blocked doorway is now a window. At first floor the 2 bays to right have 2-light casements and the outer bays have blocked openings. Thatched roof has 3 ashlar stacks. Left gable wall has C17 mullioned windows of 2 and 3 lights to 3 floors. Rear has a central stair projection with a small window under a label, and has a c19 slated outshut containing the present front entrance. C19 rear wing, returning from the right end, has leaded stone-mullioned windows, a gable parapet with shaped projecting kneelers, and an ornamental panel in the gable containing a carved rose within a quatrefoil. Slated range to right of the train range is probably mostly C19 and has further lattice-glazed mullioned windows. C18 single-storey kitchen projects from side right of front and links to barn (q.v.). It has a large 3-light leaded casement and a massive ashlar lateral stack with a brick shaft. Interior not inspected. Early C19 alterations may be by Thomas Rickman.
