GLYMPTON SP4221 11/60 The Old Rectory

Rectory, now house. Early to mid-C18 with early C19 alterations and mid-to late C19 additions. Probably incorporating an earlier core. Squared and coursed limestone with stone dressings, coursed rubble to rear. Two-span stone-slate and C20 machine-tile roof. Double-depth plan. Two storeys and attic over basement. Plinth and plat band. Pair of integral stone and brick end stacks to left with weatherings, integral brick end stack to right of rear parallel range, and brick and stone stack off-centre to right in valley. Pair of gabled dormers to left with 2-light wooden casements. Three bays; early C19 glazing bar sashes with stone cills and chamfered ashlar reveals with flat stone arches. Central pair of early C19 half-glazed doors with lower flush panels, C18 rusticated surround with dropped keystone, and late C19 timber framed gabled porch with pair of half-glazed doors. Fire insurance plate between central and left-hand first-floor windows. Right-hand gable end: 2 bays; glazing bar sashes with chamfered stone surrounds. Late C19 rear wing of coursed rubbie with stone slate roof and stone and brick ridge stack. Interior; mainly early C19, including staircase consisting of open string with cut brackets, stick balusters and ramped handrail, wreathed to turned foot newel. Partition wall removed between entrance hall and left-hand ground-floor room to form larger roomy C18 segmental-arched stone fireplace to west. Other early C19 fireplaces with reeded architraves. C18 two-panelled doors and early C19 six-panelled doors. The rear parallel range probably dates from the late C17 (see straight joint to right-hand gable end), although it is now much altered.
