4/107 West Town Farmhouse
11.11.52 II
Farmhouse. C17 or earlier, stair said to be dated 1671, right end addition and crosswing probably C18. Colourwashed rendered cob; slate roof, gabled at left end, hipped at right end of crosswing; left end stack, 2 rear lateral stacks, rear lateral stack to crosswing with tall brick chimney shaft. No access to interior at time of survey (1985), but the plan appears to be 3 rooms and a through or cross passage, the higher end to the left with a hall heated from a rear lateral stack and an inner room served by the left end stack, the lower end room heated by a rear lateral stack; rear stair wing at higher end. The 3-room range has been extended at the lower end and a crosswing adjoins the right end of the range at right angles to the front elevation. 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4-window front with regular fenestration, a 2-storey gabled porch approximately central to the main range and a hipped crosswing at the right (lower) end. The porch has a weather-boarded gabled and a canted 5-light first floor bay window; it was formerly carried on posts (dated photograph) but was enclosed with brick on the ground floor before 1969 (dated photograph). Fenestration to left of porch regular: the left-hand windows 3-light casements 3 panes per light, windows to left of porch similar 5-light casements. To the right of the porch the 2 first floor windows are 3-light casements, 3 panes per light. Ground floor window adjacent to porch at right is a 4-light mullioned window, ground floor window right 4-light casement, 6 panes per light. The front elevation is particularly attractive and visible from the main road. The rear elevation has a gabled stair wing at the left (higher) end. No access to interior at time of survey (1985) but it is said to be very unaltered with open fireplaces, large cross beams and a stair with turned balusters dated 1671. Described by Braddick as "one of the architectural gems of the parish". Braddick, L.E., "Whitestone and Oldridge", T.D.A., Vol XCIV, (1962), pp. 339-362, p. 348.
