2. 1848 by J A Chatwin, his first work on leaving Barry's office. Richly detailed pair of semi-detached Italianate stucco villas. A virtually symmetrical design with service wings set back behind screen walls. Very narrow recessed strip marking party wall between the 3 bay fronts. Each with centre break. Plinth; entablature and applied parapet over ground floor; first floor impost string; bed mould to frieze with console brackets supporting moulded boxed eaves. Hipped slate roof, console-corniced stucco chimneys. Overall symmetry of fenestration with inner Venetian windows on ground floor and single outer windows, corresponding with 2 light arcaded inner windows on first floor and single outer and central ones to each front on first floor. The ground floor windows have panelled pilasters with sections of entablature and keyed archi- volt arches, diamond panelled aprons. Smaller archivolted first floor windows with console imposts, the 2 light arcaded windows with panelled pilasters. The most ornate features of the elevations axe concentrated on the entrances in the centre breaks of each front. Each has boldly rusticated surround with concave return into the reveal, large vermiculated keystone to the arch and, of particular note, ornate and deeply modelled shell and feather fanned motif to lunette. Four panel door in panelled reveal. No 38 has lower set back service way with 3 archivolted first floor windows and 2 linking stringcourses. The screen wall in line with front has segmental carriage arch. Similar wing to No 39 but with flat entablature first floor windows to front and 4 arched windows and return on St James's Road, 2 blind. Plain stucco rear elevations with 2 storey canted bays.
