ST JAMES' LANE SU 42 NE 12/461 The Pagoda House GV II House. Built in 1848 for Richard Andrews, 5 times Mayor of Southampton, in the Chinese style. Originally an L shape plan but the L was filled in in the late Cl9. Faced with fishscale tiles on the upper floors and flint with red brick dressings to ground floor. Hipped slate roof with 1 stack brick and 1 red brick chimneystack. 3 storeys 5 windows including 3 light canted bay through 2 upper floors all with chinoiserie glazing with some coloured panes. Very wide double bracket eaves cornice with possibly unique wooden fretwork corner brackets 2nd floor has casements to 2nd floor. 1st floor has similar French windows with renewed glazed verandah (original one was tent-shaped) with wooden supports and renewed trelliswork balcony. The balcony is supported on cast iron pillars and wide iron brackets. Ground floor has 3 round-headed windows and late C19 projecting porch with cambered headed doorcase. Interior has good staircase with scrolled tread ends, mahogany handrail and cylindrical balusters with 3 spherical projections. Lounge has ceiling rose and cornice with square stylized flowers. Wooden mantelpiece with swags, paterae and ovolo moulding and mirror with palm leaf design and lions mask. Marble fireplace with pilasters to ante room. Rear door has coloured glass marginal panes and painted scenes of peasant life. Here a series of distinguished guests were entertained including the European liberal politicians Kossuth (shown speaking in the lounge in a print from the Illustrated London News) Czartoristi and Garibaldi. According to contemporary engraving the house originally had more Chinese looking chimneys, finals on the roof and possibly dragon finials on the balcony which originally had a fretted balcony.
