House. C16 or earlier open hall house, late C16 inserted floor and Cl7 central chimney, restored in early c20 probably by Forsyth & Maule. Timber frame on red brick sill. Roughcast infill between exposed close-studding. Some red brick infill on ground floor to right of door. Steep old red tile roofs. A classic open hall house facing N with 2 storeys jettied crosswing at W. 3-bay hall range with E room partitioned off and long cranked braces to cranked tie-beam of open truss of hall. 5- light diamond mullioned window in rear wall of hall. Upper floor of 2-bay crosswing divided at middle truss but evidence for ground floor ambiguous. Deeply chamfered axial beam and cross beam of hall floor suggest a smoke-hood before present Cl7 chimney built converting house to a lobby entry plan. Back-to- back fireplaces heat narrow E room and the hall. Chamfered and stopped joists, axial in end room but carried by axial beams in hall. N front has 5 small casement flush windows and a gabled open timber porch (renewed) with carved date '1518'. Projecting wing to right has heavy corner brackets to the jetty. L-shaped tall red brick central chimney. Later external chimney on W side of crosswing serving front half. Small timber-framed tiled projections at W and S c1920 in keeping. Moulded and panelled oak door with open gabled porch at E end. Interior has cranked tension braces trenched through inner face of close-studding in exterior walls in both main range and wing. Clasped purlin roofs with queen strut and collar trusses. Chamfered and hogged lintols to open fireplaces. Timber frame exposed inside and outside. A most interesting complete late medieval house.
