Description

Braughing village TL 3925 BRAUGHING THE STREET (east side) 9/46 No 22 (The Gatehouse) 22.2.67

GV II

House. Late medieval, drastic restoration in 1950's. Timber frame roughcast but with framing exposed in 2 jetties on front (W). Walling of ground floor replaced by plastered brickwork. Steep old red tiled roofs hipped with gablets. An open hall house with 2 crosswings. The jettied ends of these have close-studding with curved tension braces. 2-bay hall was entered by cross- passage within N wing where 2 short screens form a vestigial spere-truss. A stair rose at the rear of the N (service) wing and the 2-light window to light it survives. The W front now has 3 C20 2-light casement windows on the ground floor, a similar window in each jettied wing, a small upper window under the eaves in the centre and a mullioned window next the N wing. Large external chimney on S end. The N wing has a simple collar-rafter roof; the narrower S wing has a plain crown-post roof with 2-way struts. In the partition at the upper (S) end of the hall are pegholes for the original bench. (RCHM Typescript).
