Farmhouse, originally a manor house belonging to the Abbey of St Albans. Incorporates large C15 hall. Extended mid C16 and mid- late C17. C19 plastered walls. Plain tile roof. 2 storeys. 4 C19 glazing bar casements. Central wide half-glazed door in modern surround. Gabled cross wing on right is mid C16. The hall is left of the cross wing, its ends marked by red brick ridge chimney stacks, mid C16 on W (an insertion into a cross passage); mid-late C17 on E. Walls of hall are stone-faced flint. Internally there are stone arched doorways to the rear of the side walls. Broad fireplace on W side with roll-moulded 4- centre arch. Exceptionally well preserved roof. 3 bays. Smoke blackened timbers throughout. Arch braced collar trusses on carved stone corbels. Curved wind braces. Original smoke louvre in centre. E fireplace has timber lintel. Mid-late C17 gabled stair turret at rear. Service wing of same date on E, but with later red brick casing. (RCHM Typescript).
