Description

WELTON COWGATE SE 9527 (west side) 9/69 No 15 (Welton Grange) 6.5.52 - II* House. c1741, for the Wilkinson family. Coursed brick sized brown limestone with ashlar dressings, slate roofs. 2 storeys, 3 bays: centre bay breaks forward slightly under a low pediment. Plinth, rusticated quoins. Central C20 glazed and panelled door in rusticated surround with projecting keyblock under floating pediment with floral design to tympanum. To right and left are sashes with glazing bars in raised surrounds. First-floor band. Centre bay of first floor has Venetian window with moulded cornice and projecting keyblock: sash with glazing bars and radial glazing to centre light; 9-pane unequal sashes to right and left in raised surrounds. Eaves and raked cornices with projecting blank panel to pediment. Axial and end brick stacks, hipped roof. Interior: the interior survives virtually intact and is characterised by great richness and some originality. Stairhall: cantilevered cut-string stair with moulded tread ends and 3 balusters to each tread, the outer two turned, the inner twisted; heavy moulded and wreathed handrail. Ramped and panelled dado. Scrolled string at higher level beneath an oculus with ornate floral design to glazing bars. Heavily moulded enriched entablature: scrolled frieze with central masks flanked by foliage under a modillion cornice enriched with egg and dart and rosettes between the modillions. The ceiling has a central elliptical dome with a plaster eagle in high relief perched on a branch. In each corner are representations on medallions of the 4 seasons linked by festoons with central baskets of fruit. Good quality first-floor door cases with panelled reveals and soffits, and raised-and-fielded panelled doors. Main door to the ground floor is in a pilastered doorcase with pulvinated frieze and broken dentilled pediment. To the left room is a 6-panel door under a scrolled pediment: over the door is a garland of leaves. Many other features of similar quality survive within the house but could not be inspected.
