NEWBALD SOUTH NEWBALD ROAD SE 93 NW (west side) 7/70 Church of Saint Nicholas 7.2.68 I Church. Nave, transepts and lower part of crossing tower c1140; early C13 belfry stage to crossing tower; C15 chancel and north vestry. Ashlar, slate roof, cruciform plan. 6-bay nave, 2-bay north and south transepts, central tower of 3 stages including crossing arches, 3-bay chancel with north vestry. Nave: low chamfered plinth, pilaster buttresses, double- chamfered sill band. 4 round-headed windows of 2 square orders. Bay 2 breaks forward slightly to round-headed door of 4 orders on nook-shafts: these have scallop capitals with volutes on the east side, and scallop capitals with trails to the west. Paired attached shafts, with masks and trails to imposts, to the reveals on either side. Outer order: square. Second order: cable moulding. Third order: roll and quirk. Fourth order: chevrons. Four rolls to soffit. The nook-shafts, particularly to the east, bear a large number of incised crosses. Over the door is a vesica, of 3 orders, containing a fine Christ in Majesty. Outer order: roll moulding; middle order: chevrons; inner order: guilloche. Similar fenestration to north wall: a north door of 4 orders on nook-shafts: the outer and inner square, 2 central with chevrons. Double roll to soffit. Carved corbel- table with numerous grotesque faces and beasts (which runs around the transepts). Raised coped gable with flory cross finial. West wall: 4-light pointed window with Perpendicular tracery under a hoodmould. South transept: similar details of plinth, pilaster buttresses, and sill bands. Advanced South door, to west end of south gable, of 4 orders on nook-shafts with scallop capitals with trails and volutes carrying quirk-and-chamfer imposts. 4 orders of chevron and a roll to the soffit of the arch. Boarded door with long wrought-iron strap-hinges decorated with incised chevrons. Above the sill band are 3 stepped lancets beneath a pointed hoodmould. Double- chamfered eaves band. Oculus of 2 orders to gable: outer of chevrons, inner square. Raised coped gable, Celtic cross finial. West wall: single round- headed window of 2 square orders above sill band. East wall: a 3-light round-headed window with Perpendicular tracery under a hoodmould. North transept: very similar, with the addition of a mid-wall buttress to the north gable. To the west of the buttress is a round-headed door of 2 orders of chevrons on nook-shafts with scallop capitals. Roll to soffit of arch. To the east side of the mid-wall buttress is a round-headed window of 2 square orders. To the gable, an oculus like that in the corresponding position in the south transept. Raised coped gable, Celtic cross finial. Central tower: twin chamfered lancets to each face of the belfry stage. Double-chamfered string over, crenellated parapet, crocketed finials. To the north-west corner is a projecting, square, stair turret with slit windows. Chancel: high chamfered plinth, buttresses with offsets. Three 4- centred windows with Perpendicular tracery under hoodmoulds. Coped parapet. 2-light, 4-centred east window with Perpendicular tracery under hoodmould. Raised coped gable with cross finial. Interior: 4 round-headed crossing arches all of 2 orders on attached shafts with scallop capitals and paired rolls to soffits. West arch: 2 orders of chevrons to west, square order to east. East arch: as the west arch. Transept arches: square orders. The east walls of the north and south transepts each have a round- headed opening, now filled with Perpendicular tracery, into a former apse: chevrons on a quirk and chamfer impost band; scallop capitals to nook- shafts. Chancel: cusped ogee-headed niche to north of east window: similar piscina to south wall. C12 tub font with foliage bands on 8 clustered columns. Monument to William Gill, d 1723, with big cartouche.
