SO 82 SE STAVERTON CHURCH LANE (south side) 6/93 Old Manor House (formerly listed as Manor Cottages) 4.7.60 GV II House. C15 or C16, altered and enlarged early C17, altered mid C19, mid C20, for Mrs. McIlquham. Timber-framing on stone plinth, brick nogged or rendered infill, tiled roof, concrete tile to porch, late C20 brick wing. Three-bay main wing, 2-bay end, forming 'L', 2 storeys with unlit attic: single-storey wing in corner, and lean-to to larger section. Windows all casement, mid C20 metal opening lights, leaded lights. Gable larger wing faced road: framing to ground floor close studded, curved braces corner posts to sill, two 2-light windows. First floor jettied, framing 3 panels high, top and bottom square with curved braces across corners, taller centre close studded. In centre paired 2-light casement, over larger square panels. Cambered tie-beam over, collar, close studded infill, Carolean royal arms in centre, framed columns (C20). Gable lean-to brick wing on right. Left return; framing as gable to ground floor: curved bracket to jetty, 3-light window, paired single lights and 3 single lights, left end hidden by porch, moulded beam at first floor level. Above, framing as ground floor, three 2-light casements, one set in an originally- wider opening. Chimney on ridge left end. On left open, single- storey porch, king-post truss in gable with curved struts; slightly set back on left single-storey wing, dummy 2-panel high framing, single-light casement. Above, set back behind roof, upper floor 2-bay wing: framing 2-panels high, squarish panels. Two- light casement with single each side, angle-strut to wallplate from corner post on right; gable over, high collar, blocked window below, curved apex struts: ridge chimney to right. Left return: first floor jettied. Ground floor close studded framing 2 panels high, 3-light window. Above, framing 3 panels high, as gable facing road: centre plain, with 3-light window over: gable over with high collar, blocked window, curved apex struts. Interior not inspected; V.C.H. noted Carolean royal arms over one fireplace and remains of the same over another in 1968. Three-bay wing projecting towards road oldest part, 2-bay wing at right angles added possibly early C17, when upper part of gable to first section was altered to match. House probably not a manor house. It was divided into 2 cottages in C19; a lean-to to long wing had appeared by early C20; this was refaced in brick, the house put- back into one occupation and the porch built in the angle in the 1960's.
