5/106 The Manor House II
Former manor house. Early C17-mid C17, and C19, further alterations and extensions early C20 by Norman Jewson. Random, roughly squared limestone, stone slate roof, stone stacks. 'L'- shaped early core with wing by Norman Jewson on south-east, single bay. Late C19-early C20 extension left of early core. 1½, 2 and 2½ storeys. Early core 2½ storeys, probably originally 2 storeys (roofline raised at a later date). Facade comprises a forward gable with 3-light stone-mullioned casement with scroll-ended hood to ground floor, similar 2-light window to first floor, 2-light casement with stopped hood to attic. Wall left of forward facing gable rebuilt late C19-early C20 with 3-light stone-mullioned casement to ground floor, similar .stone-mullioned window with gable over, above. Single bay late Cl9-early C20 extension set back on left with plank door with decoratives strap hinges. Trefoil-headed single light left (probably reused), similar window in left-hand wall of early core. Late C19-early C20 gable projects forward right of early core. C20 solid studded oak door within flat- chamfered slighty pointed surround at front of lean-to against left-hand wall. Carved stone-mullioned bay window to ground floor of forward facing gable, 3-light stone-mullioned casement with stopped hood with foliate stops and relieving arch to first floor, blind trefoil towards apex of gable. Two-windowed wing runs away right with 3-light stone-mullioned casements with transoms and stopped hoods to ground floor. Similar casements without stopped hoods to first floor. All windows with leaded panes. Axial, lateral and gable-end stack, some octagonal. Roll-cross saddles and slightly stepped gable end coping. Interior of early C17-mid C17 main range; intersecting beams with moulded stops, fireplace with C17 carved oak overmantel dated and initialled 'R A A 1640' with 2 archways carved with dragons and grotesque (probably reused). Tie-beams with deep hollow chamfers and moulded stops in neighbouring room. South-east range (by Norman Jewson); panelled inner hall at bottom of stairs, sitting room with simple moulded plasterwork margin with inset corners to 2 ceiling panels. Nine-panel doors. Reused C17 carved oak cupboard doors in passage to dining room. Dining room ceiling oval moulded plasterwork margin decorated with fruit and flowers. Decorative cornice with modillion and egg and dart decoration. Panelling almost to ceiling height.
