Description

PAINSWICK CHELTENHAM ROAD SO 8610/8710 (east side) 6/50 Washwell House GV II Detached house, possibly formerly three. C17, C18 and early C19. Limewashed coursed rubble to street, stone slate roofs, but slate to low unit to left. Building presents main front away from road, and backs are close to and parallel with the road. In three principal, connected units, but with a low one storey link to a gabled unit, far left. Three gable stacks with cappings, and one brick ridge stack to left. From the road a gabled two storey and attic unit with 2 over 3-light casements and a French door, this has concrete tile roof; then a low link with plank door to wood lintel. Main block then in 3 units; the first has 2 storeys and attic with a 3-light dormer with stone slate cheeks, leading to lights over a 2-light chamfered mullion casement with leading, over a similar casement without leading; first floor is a single light stair window. Middle unit is set back, and door, off-centre left is 6-panel flush in gabled porch with solid stone cheeks, down steps from street level; ground floor has two wide-spaced 12-pane sashes, first floor has one to right. The third unit has plain wall except for small opening at eaves and a ventilation grille; the return gable wall has a 2 over a 3-light casement and a French door to right. Garden front, from left: 3 window block with two gabled 2-light dormers over one 12 and two 16-light sashes above 2 large 12-paned and a pair of margin-light doors under a stone slate pentice on brackets; this unit in coursed dressed stone. Middle unit is ashlar with three 2-light dormers over three 12-pane sashes each at first and ground floors; those in bay 3 are smaller than the others. Third unit in coursed dressed stone has one 2-light chamfer mullion casement at first and ground floors to the right of a C20 glazed door. This is linked by a plain wall to a gabled unit with C20 fenestration. Interior not inspected. The building forms an effective entry point to the north end of the town, in conjunction with Washwell Barn (qv) opposite. The road was made in 1820/21.
