House. 1824. Francis and George Webster for W.D. Crewdson. Later alterations: verandahs on south side added c1914 by Richardson; West side remodelled in 1916 by W.A. Nelson following a fire: bays formed from original stone, balustrading and balconies added; C20 alterations to service wing. Greek Revival Style. Limestone ashlar with sandstone dressings; hipped graduated greenslate roof with corniced limestone chimneys and deeply overhanging modillioned cornice with cast-iron ogee gutter. 2 storeys. Entrance front 3 bays, 2:1:2, articulated by Tuscan pilasters: central bay recessed. 3-panelled door with oblong fanlight in stone surround under porch with entablature supported on 2 sets of paired Ionic columns; 2 sashes to either side with stone surrounds, 5 sashes above. Garden front at right angles: 3 bays articulated by Tuscan pilasters. Central sash; single storey bay window with tripartite sash to each side, 3 sashes above. Stone balustrades and cast-iron balcony supported on cast-iron columns to 1st floor. Rear: 4 windows to each floor; Tuscan pilasters at corners; glazed cast-iron verandah. All windows with glazing bars throughout. Interior has original 6-panelled doors; architraves, picture rails, cornices, panelled window surrounds and shutters throughout; stone staircase with iron balustrade finishing in spiral and 2-step curtail. Moulded plaster ceiling to landing. Marble fireplaces from Webster's works. (Complete set of original plans and elevations for original building and for verandahs kept in County Archives in Kendal).
